Chapter 43: The White Magic

Richard meets Lord Darken Rahl in a garden. Rahl questions him about the Book of Counted Shadows. When Richard recites a line about needing a Confessor to verify the book, the name "Kahlan" triggers his memories and the power awakens, restoring all his memories. He kills Rahl's two guards who try to harm Denna. Rahl reveals he has two boxes of Orden and that someone betrayed Richard, giving him the third box. Rahl shows Richard the two boxes, and Richard removes the covering from the jeweled box, proving he knows the book. Rahl tells Richard he must return in one week to help him open the boxes, or Kahlan will be tortured by Constance. Rahl puts an enemy web on Richard so his friends will see him as their worst enemy. Rahl tells Richard he must kill Denna to be free, explaining that magic has two sides and Richard must master the white magic. Richard goes to Denna's quarters. She is naked, waiting for him. She explains that prophecies foretold a Seeker who would master the white magic and kill her. Richard kills her with the white magic of the sword, forgiving her everything. He grieves over her body.
