Main Events
Richard and Kahlan discover the night stone is missing from Richard's pack. They realize Siddin must have taken it. They rush to find him, screaming his name. Siddin is sitting in the mud, shaking the pouch, trying to get the stone out. When the stone drops into the mud, shadow things begin materializing and moving toward the boy. Richard fights desperately to protect Siddin, cutting through the shadows with his sword while Kahlan tries to reach them.
Elder Toffalar, one of the elders, attacks Kahlan with a knife, blaming her for destroying their ancestors' spirits. Kahlan hesitates to use her power because she doesn't want Richard to see, but when Elder Toffalar's knife cuts her arm, she touches him, using her Confessor power. Elder Toffalar falls into the shadows and dies. Kahlan finally reaches Siddin and manages to pry the stone from his hand and put it back in the pouch, causing the shadows to disappear. The Bird Man names Elder Savidlin as the new elder to replace Elder Toffalar, and the remaining elders kneel before Richard, asking him to become a Mud Person. Richard tests them by drawing his sword as if to execute them, but the sword stops him, and he returns their lives and honor to them. The Bird Man names Richard and Kahlan as Mud People, and the elders agree to call a Council of Seers the next night.
