Main Events
Richard works with the Mud People to construct a clay tile roof for the Spirit House. He teaches them how to make wave-shaped tiles that interlock, creating a roof that will not leak. The women help make the tiles, and the men help install them. Kahlan watches from a distance, feeling isolated as the Mud People keep their distance from her because she is a Confessor. She thinks about her sister, who was killed by a quad sent by Lord Darken Rahl. Her sister had been brutally tortured before dying in Kahlan's arms.
The Bird Man sits with Kahlan and comforts her when she becomes emotional thinking about her sister. He shows her a small yellow bird and offers to let her keep it, but she releases it, saying it should be free. The Bird Man warns her about the danger Richard poses if the elders refuse to help, and Kahlan admits she would be willing to kill even a child if it meant saving all the others. The roof is completed successfully, with a fireplace that draws smoke properly, and the Mud People are thrilled with the results.
