Main Events
Richard and Kahlan flee from heart hounds, racing their horses to Scow Swamp. They wade through the water to an island, discovering that large water snakes are repelled by the Sword of Truth when it touches the water. They spend the night on the island, with heart hounds watching from the shore. The next morning, they continue to South Haven, a rough town of thieves and misfits. At an inn, they encounter dangerous men who make crude comments about Kahlan. Richard is about to draw his sword and fight, but Kahlan stops him with quick thinking, pretending to be a prostitute who hired Richard, defusing the situation with humor. The innkeeper Bill helps them, bringing their unconscious friends up the back stairs. Bill tells them about Adie, the Bone Woman, who lives near the boundary and may be able to help Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander and Chase. Richard and Kahlan prepare to go to Adie's house the next morning.
