Main Events
The group travels to the boundary, and Chase shows Richard what it's like. The boundary appears as a green glow that becomes a wall when approached. When Chase takes Richard close to it, Richard sees through to the underworld—dark shapes calling to him, and most devastatingly, he sees his father reaching out for him, calling mournfully. Richard is overwhelmed with longing to go to his father and tries to step through the boundary, but Chase drags him back. Kahlan helps Richard recover by making him think of something else—remembering trails. She slaps Chase for taking such a risk, but Chase explains he had to show Richard what the boundary was like so he would understand the danger when they go through King's Port. Suddenly, black tentacle-like creatures from the boundary attack, striking down Chase and Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, and grabbing Kahlan by the legs, dragging her toward the boundary. Richard draws his sword and fights desperately, cutting through the creatures that appear as his father and Kahlan's sister. He saves Kahlan and carries both unconscious friends away. They escape to Scow Swamp, where heart hounds cannot follow because of the water snakes.
