Main Events
Richard searches for his friends but cannot find them. He goes to the People's Palace, arriving on the first day of winter. During a devotion, he realizes he must fight Lord Darken Rahl, not help him. He changes the devotion words to honor Kahlan instead of Rahl, and understands what he must do. He goes to the Garden of Life. Meanwhile, Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, Kahlan, and Chase arrive at the People's Palace. Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander explains that the palace is built as a giant spell that protects Rahl and weakens other wizards. Kahlan, still in the Con Dar (blood rage), goes into the Garden of Life to kill Lord Darken Rahl. Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander and Chase follow her.
