Chapter 23: The Bird Man

Main Events

Richard and Kahlan arrive at the Mud People's village, where they are greeted by Elder Savidlin and the six elders. The elders initially believe Richard is a spirit of their ancestors because he brought the rain they had prayed for. Richard tells them the truth—that he is not a spirit, but a man, the Seeker, and that Lord Darken Rahl sent the clouds to track him, not to save them. He asks them to call a Council of Seers to help find the last box of Orden, but the elders refuse, saying they do not call gatherings for outsiders.

Richard realizes the elders are not the true leaders—The Bird Man is. He approaches The Bird Man, who confirms that Richard is correct. The Bird Man explains that Richard could become a Mud Person if he first does something to help their people without expecting anything in return, and if the elders wish it. Once named a Mud Person, Richard could request a gathering. The Bird Man warns there are no guarantees the spirits will answer. Richard offers to teach the Mud People how to make roofs that do not leak, a problem that has plagued them for generations.
