Adie explains how to get through King's Port, the pass across the boundary. She tells them they cannot take horses, must not wander from the trail, and must not stop to sleep—it will take one day, one night, and most of the next day. She reveals how she lost her foot: she became overconfident and took a nap in the pass, and a gripper—a creature with armor, spikes, and hooked claws—attached itself to her ankle. Unable to remove it, she had to chop off her own foot with an axe to save her life. She warns them about the Narrows, a place halfway through where the boundary walls almost touch, and where the dead will call to them from both sides. Adie gives Richard a night stone—a magical black stone that will give light when needed—and gives Kahlan a necklace like her mother's that will protect her from the beasts. Adie reveals that Richard doesn't need a bone because the beasts cannot see him—the tooth he wears protects him. Richard decides they cannot wait for Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander and Chase to recover and must go on. He gives Adie a message for Chase to deliver to First Councilor Michael Cypher, warning him about the boundary failing and to prepare Westland for war. Richard and Kahlan prepare to cross into the Midlands alone.
